I’m not a silly man. In fact, if you don’t know me particularly well, you may even describe me as serious. And I suppose I am serious. I like to work hard, set deadlines and I actually intend to be disciplined in meeting them. Perhaps that is simply rare behaviour in a 23 year old and I am therefore seen as serious. I am organised and a bit of a stickler (or wet blanket depending on your outlook). All these qualities have earned me the label: serious.
But I am also serious about frivolous things. The plural of Lego is Lego, not Legos. I am adamant about this, regardless of the opinion of the manufacturer. I take desserts very seriously, as do all of the very best people in my opinion. Quick aside: if you ever want to assess the character of an individual, you must eat dessert with them and study their facial expression as they delight in whatever confectionery treasure you have selected. Be very weary if no excitement is present. I am very serious about Batman, Spider-Man and Superman and have had numerous conversations with my granny on their very clear differences. I believe that to her, they are fundamentally interchangeable.
As you can tell, serious. Unless, of course, it isn’t. In some way, taking the plural of a plastic block very seriously is, by nature, silly. Which, I agree, it is. Because I think I am a silly man, actually. Probably very silly. In fairness, my silliness follows a kind of structure now. I joke and play and have lots of fun writing and reading. All sort of boring, grown up examples of being silly. I am trying, this year, to let my silly out. Instead of confining it to dry wit, I am attempting to be sillier in all facets of my life.
Why, you ask? Why not! Pick a reason: it keeps you young, it’s fun, it’s a great way to learn and play and connect. Think of children who aren’t afraid to be silly, how much joy they bring to the world, and how much more they receive. Sing out loud in the train station. Wave at strangers. When last did you run anywhere for fun instead of boring old exercise? My sincere and genuine and serious recommendation for you is to try and be a little sillier.
